In spite of the tragedy our neighborhood has endured since the floods first came in late May, our EFCA Work Day, hosted at Stillmeadow Community Fellowship, and in conjunction with our partners, Miracle City Church and The Broken Wall Project, enabled volunteers from all over the Mid-Atlantic region to begin restorative work on damaged homes throughout the community.
Volunteers from a variety of Evangelical Free Churches came from Pennsylvania, Delaware and other parts of the region to roll their sleeves and help families in the Beechfield neighborhood get back to some sense or normalcy. Included in the day were eight scheduled work jobs, including mold remediation, ceiling replacement on a second floor bathroom, and gutter replacements and repair. The vast number of skilled and attentive volunteers even gave us the opportunity to do further home assessments the morning of. As a result, we got in touch with a homeowner just steps away from the church where mold had infested her walls up to four feet high. Teams instantly went to work, removing old clothes and debris from the basement, taking apart of furniture that had began molding itself, and doing a complete drywall gut.
“This day wouldn’t have been possible without all the wonderful volunteers that gave of their time.” Stillmeadow pastor, Michael S. Martin, stated. “There is still much to do, including more recovery, preparation and prevention.”
