When Pastor Michael Martin began preaching at Stillmeadow Community Fellowship in Baltimore City he could have never dreamed of what the woods behind his congregation could look like.  A tangle of invasive plants and animals choked the woodland, swallowing the once healthy forest and creek beneath a mat of unwanted vegetation.  

The potential was there, all that was needed was the right push...

Driving between Baltimore’s Irvington and Westgate neighborhoods, you might pass right by Stillmeadow Community Fellowship and never think to take a second look. From the outside, the building looks like most other churches in the area. If you’re a keen-eyed observer, you might catch a glimpse of the community garden out front… and… are those solar panels up on the roof? But before you have a chance to check, the church is in the rearview mirror.

But Stillmeadow is like a geode: ordinary on the outside, and a treasure when you take a closer look. It’s one of the first Resilience Hubs in the United States. And today, you’re getting a tour!

Faces of the Forest aims to show the real people behind responsible and sustainable forest stewardship around the country. And here that purpose takes us beyond the largely rural, commercial tree farmers that supply the paper and packaging industry. In this case, the community is the Stillmeadow Community Fellowship church on the outskirts of Baltimore, Maryland.
